When I was reached out by Carpet One Floor & Home with a challenge of creating a mood board inspired by Retro Futuristic design, using their own carpet samples, I immediately was like, OH HELL YEAH. Retro Futuristic is pretty much my love language, and any chance for me to create an imaginary dream room with unique flooring is always a GO.

In July, I received a big ol' box from Carpet One Floor & Home filled with flooring samples (I didn't know the style samples until I received the box!), extra goodies to help with creating a mood board, and a $50 gift card to add the special touches I needed to bring my own design ideas and style to life in my board, such as wallpaper, paint samples, etc.

Spoiler - I did also use items that I already owned because I'm a maximalist, and a maximalist mood board require LOTS OF STUFF.

THE SAMPLES

I was given two carpet, one hardwood, and one vinyl sample. The blue carpet and the hardwood samples were my immediate favorites, but all were really beautiful!

From left to right:

THE PLANNING

Since this mood board was going to be a flat lay with real objects, I wanted to create a rough plan in advance to work out some of my ideas and figure out what extra items I needed! BTW - I always use Canva to create my mood boards, if you ever wanted to know!

To me, Retro Futuristic (which is forecasted by Carpet One Floor & Home to be the next big trend in interiors), is creating a combo of the structural, straight line elements of Modern design with the warmth, softness, and depth of Retro styling. This means pairing a statement, structural, geometric piece of furniture, with curvy furniture pieces, lots of cozy layering, and traditional details such as moulding as well as a blend of organic, natural elements that can be present in BOTH worlds.

Board 1 Concept: Modern Luxe Femme Dining Room

The Rhythm of Life carpet sample really gave me the feeling of luxe glam when I first saw it, so I wanted to capitalize on that vibe while also incorporating the structural and abstract pieces to ground the space in the futuristic modern. Because of the emphasis on natural textures in the retro futuristic trend, I incorporated lots of touches of wood around the room, including in the chandelier, which really helps tone down the luxe glam vibe of the space. I was also incredibly inspired by this fantastic, modern geometric table from CB2 and this soft but abstract modern floral wallpaper by Drop it Modern!

Board 2 Concept: Earthy Abstract Living Room

To me, the sunflower yellow of the Point of Distinction sample really brought me into the world of the 70's, with rich and warm colors, dark woods, and organic prints. I also envisioned this space with extra cane textures to be incorporated in either furniture, accessories, or even as an interesting Japanese partition screen! I fell in love with the colors and large leafy patterns of the Belarte Studio wallpaper, which I felt was important to pair with the small dotted pattern of the carpet, for a nice contrast without feeling too busy! To bring this back in the modern world, I focused on modern terrazzo tile touches, harsh, straight lined chairs, and an abstract, structural chandelier!

CREATING THE FLAT LAYS

Using a neutral background on the floor (as you can see in the picture..pretend you didn't see the awkward foot pic...), we started placing objects, creating a stop motion video along the way for the ol' Instagram. The most important thing for me with the boards was maintaining a sense of balance with textures, colors, and object placement.

Here you can see our beautiful set up with the light kit and tripod right in my living room. We are real fancy here.

Are you itching to give your home a fresh new look without breaking the bank? Look no further! In this blog post we will explore 4 budget-friendly do-it-yourself (DIY) projects that are not only affordable but also deliver eye-catching results. From transforming pieces with paint to creating your own headboard, these DIYs are worth the effort and will leave your home looking fabulous without emptying your wallet!

  1. Upgrade old hardware with spray paint!

This is probably one of my favorite hacks that I incorporate in almost every project. Whether you have old hardware that you want to update, or if you find cheap hardware that you love but it isn't the right color, spray paint will be a GAME CHANGER!

As long as you do a nice sanding, priming (when needed) and buy spray paint that works for the material that you are spraying, the world is at your finger tips! Change your kitchen hardware to look like a modern brass or black, or even spray paint an old light fixture to be hot pink! Here are couple of examples from my OWN projects:

Spray painted piping:

Spray painted drawer pulls:

Spray Painted trash can coffee table legs:

Spray Painted Ikea Light Fixtures:

2. Paint your own headboard!

Statement headboards are all the rage, especially ones that are geometric shape cut outs! But sometimes, even DIY'ing a real upholstered headboard can be more expensive than what you are wanting to spend. So what is the solution? PAINT IT ON THE WALL. It will still create such a statement and you can get really creative with the style and size! Plus, if you get tired of it and want something new, just simply paint over it!

Make an arch:

Check out this DIY from June Motel to make a simple painted arch headboard!

Make a squiggle:

The squiggle headboard is going to be EVERYWHERE, and can easily be painted instead of upholstered! Use this tutorial from Boho Frisco to help with painting squiggles

Go dimensional:

Use some crafty color blocking to create a dimensional, geometric headboard back drop!

Paint scallops:

Use the same method for painting arches and squiggles to make your dream scalloped headboard! Stack them like below for a more deco vibe, or make a straight line of scallops for a more simple, playful and modern vibe!

3. Create a modern fluted wall with painted Corrugated PVC or Metal Panel Sheets!

Fluted walls are amazing, but doing large walls with half round wood panels can add up REAL fast. Using corrugated plastic panels can be SO much more cost effective, and give a really cool effect. Plus, it takes way less time to install! Typically this is used for roofing, but as you can see, it can be used on the wall as well! Use this tutorial for sheeting to help guide you in the process! (Remember you can always paint these sheets to remove that rustic vibe and make it modern and fun like below!

Create a painted statement wall:

Add texture to a kitchen island:

4. Update a bookshelf with Hardboard sheets to create arched face plates!

One of the biggest trends right now is arched built-in bookcases. This look is SO luxe, but can be surprisingly affordable with the right materials. Check out this video tutorial to see how this couple transformed their Billy Bookcases into Arch built-ins!

Create your own arch built-ins with Ikea bookcases:

Keep your room open, but have privacy when needed! Plus drapery offers really gorgeous opportunities for texture and color pops!

2. Sculptural Statement Pieces

Maximalism is having a moment, and with that, adding more daring statement pieces into your home is going to be huge! Sculptural lighting fixtures like chandeliers and and wall sconces are becoming increasingly popular, as well as abstract shaped rugs, unique seating, and abstract statues! They add a focal point to any room and make for a great conversation starter.

Incorporate abstract molded tables to ground the room:

Seating with tubular and structural elements will instantly upgrade your room for 2023:

Take more daring risks with oversized and structural lighting, even in smaller spaces:

3. Traditional Meets Modern

With the rise of the "Millennial Grandma" aesthetic over the last couple of years, design is leaning towards cozy textures and warm traditional vintage pieces mixed with more modern and current trends. The look is absolutely stunning, and creates a much cozier and lived in environment compared to the stale MCM or minimalist trend that we saw in times past.

Incorporate modern furniture with traditional or vintage accessories:

Luxe and traditional printed flooring with warm, modern furniture (texture, texture texture!):

4. Warm, Dark, Bold Color Palettes

With the rise of maximalism and incorporating warmth into the design aesthetic, more intense color palettes, featuring darker and saturated tones are going to be on the rise! Think warm red or berry tones, moody sages, copper, and pops of more intense colors, like cobalt!

Incorporate bold color pops with darker walls:

Bring warmth into your ceilings:

Drench your walls in an elevated brown:

5. Pattern on Pattern on Pattern

2023 is all about being expressive and daring in your design choices. This means that busy is back, and basic is out. Don't be afraid to mix a whole collage of patterns together, busier might just be better this time! This aesthetic isn't for everyone, but it is definitely going to continue to make an impact as we go forward this year, especially with the rise of designers like Dani Dazey who have made this a staple of their design aesthetic.

Mix patterned tile with colorful wallpaper:

Contrast a ceiling wallpaper with wallpaper on your walls:
